MLIS Course Catalog

The online Master of Science in Library and Information Science program meets the same high academic standards of Syracuse University’s on-campus programs. The curriculum is 36 credits and can be completed in as few as 18 months. The curriculum is structured as follows:

Primary Core Coursework – 18 Credits

Students will complete core coursework in the following topics: Introductory Concepts, Information Resources, and Management and Policy.

Electives – 15 Credits

Fifteen credits of electives allow students to extend their core knowledge and skills in directions of their choice. Electives can be selected from graduate courses from the Library and Information Science: School Media program and the Information Management program. Students can also take up to six credits of specific graduate courses from other Syracuse University schools, such as the Whitman School of Management. In selecting courses that are not LIS-focused, the student must consult with his/her student success advisor.

Immersion

Hosted at least twice per year, immersions allow students to meet and collaborate with their peers, learn from guest speakers who are industry experts, and participate in collaborative workshops. Students will be required to attend at least one immersion during their degree program, but please note that immersions are not for credit. We encourage you to attend your immersion early in the program so that you can build relationships with your fellow classmates as soon as possible.

Exit Requirements – 3 Credits

The exit requirement for the Master of Science in Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree is either a three-credit internship or independent study.
